MAP began in 1999 after Northside United Methodist Church’s youth ministry participated in a service trip in Nashville to volunteer with inner-city service projects. After that experience, we saw that Atlanta had similar needs, which could be met by unifying teenagers and adults in service of our community. We soon learned that roofing was one of the major needs of elderly and disadvantaged citizens, so in 2004 we began to focus our efforts specifically on roofing. In the following years, MAP provided new roofs at 142 homes and one community church.

In 2011, we wanted to refocus MAP’s direction, while continuing to fulfill our mission of “Rebuilding a city one life at a time.” We became excited about idea of building playgrounds at daycare centers and children’s shelters in some of Atlanta’s historic and diverse urban neighborhoods. Between 2011 and 2012, MAP completed playgrounds at 21 locations, establishing relationships between Northside Church and local daycare centers, children’s homes, community churches, and learning centers.

We hope to deepen the personal connections between our volunteers and those whom we serve as we take MAP to exciting new places in 2016.

 

Who Makes Up MAP?

•     Over the last fourteen years, more than 1500 students, grades 6-12, have participated.
•     Members from 28 different churches and organizations from across the southeast.
•     Over 1100 adult volunteers have sacrificed vacation time and weekends to aid MAP.
•     MAP-built playgrounds serve over 2500 children in diverse communities.
